Insitutional partners:
The Academy, Pace and the institutional partners believe that international understanding can be enhanced through educational and cultural exchange. Accordingly, the parties desire to create an ongoing framework that facilitates the study and exhibition of art created by students and faculty of the cooperating educational institutions.
Designed to encourage an exchange of backgrounds, cultures, and ideas between young Italian and American aspiring artists, the initiative’s primary aim is to strengthen cultural understanding between the two countries. It offers the opportunity for young American artists to explore the history and beauty inherent in Tuscany’s Mugello and a comparable experience for young Italian artists to enter the energetic world of contemporary art in New York. The project also promotes exhibitions of the artists’ works in Italy and the United States.
Organized by the Academy and the institutional partners with cooperation from Pace, the main components of this collaborative project are a summer educational program in Tuscany for art students from the participating institutions and subsequent exhibitions in Tuscany and in New York City of art works created during the summer program.
During the summer, Pace and Academy art students spent one month in Florence and the Mugello (the Tuscan valley north of Florence) engaged in studio art education and creative production of artworks. Seven Pace students and their accompanying professor were hosted in Florence for one week and in the Mugello for three weeks where they followed, together with selected students of the Accademia of Florence, a program which included study and investigation in the field of art and painting, the realization of paintings, cultural and museum visits and lectures, and hospitality in the Italian community.
Selected student works will be exhibited in the Mugello during September in various prestigious and historical locations (the Castle of Cafaggiolo, the house of Giotto in Vicchio, and the Convento of San Bonaventura al Bosco ai Frati) and subsequently during October at the Schimmel Theatre Gallery at Pace University in New York City. When the exhibit is installed in New York City, selected Italian students and their accompanying professor will travel with the exhibit and be hosted by Pace University, where they will have the opportunity to participate in University life and the cultural heritage offered by the City of New York for a period of two weeks.
